MUSIC CONCERTS BANNED BEYOND 10PM IN UGANDA

WITH American singer, song writer and producer – Sisqo, real names Mark Arthaveans Andrew’s, highly anticipated concert just around the corner, KCCA’s Executive Director, Jennifer Musisi has cracked the whip on concerts. If news filtering in is anything to go by, the future of Kampala’s night outdoor entertainment is silent disco! The no-nonsense Musisi is determined to put music concerts into perspective. She has outlawed ‘loud’ concerts and has decreed artistes don’t perform beyond 10:00pm (a time when most concert-goers are still ocking in and enjoying curtain raising acts).
In a strong-worded letter that will surely cause anguish to Kampala’s party animals, she has moved to ban concerts at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds, Kati Kati Bar and Restaurant, Hotel Africana People’s space until owners get clearance from KCCA.
In the communiqué obtained, aforementioned places, which recently played hostto the music battle between Bobi Wine and Bebe Cool, Coco Finger’s launch and the Goodlyfe’s Tonjagala launch respectively, are faulted for persistent noise pollution, especially on weekends when they host large and noisy gatherings.
Please take note that you have been holding these outdoor events without a permit from KCCA as required by the Law and Order Ordinance (2006) and the National Environment (Noise Standards and Control Regulations, 2003).
This is to, therefore, direct you to stop forthwith any outdoor events at your facility until you obtain a permit from both KCCA and NEMA for each particular event you intend to hold.” the letter, signed by KCCA’s Director Legal Affairs Mike Okua indicates.
Musisi’s flowers spark fury
An insider at KCCA tells e Kampala Sun that the ultimatum from Jennifer Musisi stems from an incident during the just concluded Battle of the Champions between Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine.
The source tells that Musisi was driven to boiling point when show goers at Kyadondo, in total disregard for her efforts to beautify that part of town, destroyed her flowers as they stampeded to the venue.
This was also soured by the concert ending at 4:00am with Police having to step on stage to stop Bebe Cool from further performance. The source says Musisi intends to make it hard for those with facilities for outdoor events to obtain permits.
Even then, the source says, these permits will come with stringent guidelines, among which is for the concerts to end by 10:00pm. Peter Kaujju, the KCCA spokesperson confirms the new developments. In a phone interview, he admitted the new guidelines, owners of the outdoor event facilities, will have to apply for a permit from both KCCA and NEMA for each particular event they intend to hold.  He was, however, coy on the cost of these permits but added; “Failure to comply with the instructions will compel KCCA to impound one’s entertainment machines and or close the premises and cause arrest and persecution for violation of the National Environment (Noise Standards and Control Regulations, 2003 and the Law and Order Ordinance (2006).” Kaujju admitted that extreme discomfort from concerts isn’t only affecting the Kololo and Naguru areas but will soon expand to cover all the other entertainment facilities in the city famed for hosting loud concerts.
Previous bans failed
In 2008 bar owners and born-again churches were thrown in similar panic as over 11 were closed after being found to be main culprits responsible for high levels of noise pollution. The managers of these places had their machines impounded and were charged in court. Most of them pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined $100.  The bars that were penalised then included Golden Keys in Kiwatule, Soberz in Ntinda, Steak Out, Biggs, Blue Haze and Cheerz, all on Lumumba Avenue; as well as Punchline, Little Mama, Café Cherries and Tasha’s Pub, in Kabalagala. Also among them were Blue Corner and Ground Zero, both in Wandegeya. A NEMA official says on average, 10 complaints about noise pollution are received every week.

The National Environment Noise Standards and Control Regulations (2003) specifies the maximum permissible levels, as measured on the sound meter, are 40, 60 and 75 decibels for residential, commercial and industrial areas respectively. However, according to the source, some concerts produce up to 150 decibels, which are similar to a plane taking on the runway. The managers at the affected outdoor entertainment facilities declined to comment although a famous music promoter, on condition of anonymity, branded her a joker. “Let her start with the churches before wasting time on us. Many have tried and failed. Interfering with our business is the biggest joke I’ve heard from Musisi,” he angrily responded.

clipI have lost six wives to AIDS! But how come whenever I test, I am HIV negative? Does it mean I am immune to the virus?”This question stunned a crowd that had gathered in Kalangala town for a voluntary counseling and testing crusade on Tuesday. It was organised by Walter Clinic and Strides for Family Health, a USAID-funded healthcare initiative. When the over 400 people were given an opportunity to ask questions, Vincent Kyambadde volunteered his story. He said he was 52 and that every woman he married had died after suffering a painful illness that failed to respond to any treatment, until he decided to go for an HIV test.

POLICE DELAY THE FINDINGS OVER DIANA NEKOYE'S BOYFRIEND'S DEATH

The findings of Police investigations into the muder of a photographer are yet to be revealed. Renowned model Diana Nekoye Sifuna was investigated over the death of her boyfriend Charlie Grieves-Cook, who died after jumping off from the woman’s third floor apartment. Nekoye, a former MNET Face of Africa contestant recorded a statement with CID officers two months ago who went with her to the house on Lang’ata Road, where she recounted to them what happened that Saturday night, when Grieves-Cook died.
Lang’ata divisional Police chief David Bunei confirmed that Nekoye had been questioned and was cooperating with officers investigating Grieves-Cook’s death. The deceased was a Commercial Advertising Photographer at EyeQueue Productions based in Nairobi. In her statement to the police, Nekoye said she rushed to the balcony when the thugs were gone and found Grieves-Cook holding onto a metal bar, his legs hanging in the air and she wasn’t able to pull him up. She went back to the house to try and get something that could help her pull him up back up but when she returned to the balcony, he wasn’t there. That is when she saw his body lying on the concrete where he had fallen, most likely after running out of energy.
Grieves-Cook, a renowned commercial photographer and a tour company director died on Saturday night when he fell off the third floor balcony of Nekoye’s house while fleeing gangsters who had attacked them in the house, according to police and guards at the apartment.
Police need to unravel the mystery behind this death and the culprits be brought to book.

Rather, with an American lead cast (Mark Williams) and a cross section of other foreign and Nigerian actors (including Chet Anekwe of Monique’s ‘Phat Girls,’ Chisom Oz-Lee and others), Nigeria’s U.S-based producer, Emmanuel Ijeh delivers a movie that takes a giant leap into the halls of Hollywood yet retaining its Nigerian essence. CHAMELEONE'S WIFE SHOCKS HUBBY

WITH birthday party Singer Jose Chameleone was pleasantly surprised when he turned up for a usual hanging out thing at Silk Lounge in Kampala a week ago, only to walk in on his own birthday party, with many of his friends and family present.  The party, which took place on April 30, was organised by his wife Daniela behind the musician’s back. In attendance were some known names: fashion guru Sylvia Owori, Singers Navio, Coco Finger, Meddie Ssentongo, Cedric Babu, Elvis Sekyanzi, John Segawa, lawyer Caleb Alaka and his lover, Jackie Chandiru, name them. Chameleone, who succumbed to the prank, just decided to enjoy the night, treating his guests to a request show of sorts, where many asked for their favourite songs by the singer as he did their accapela versions. The birthday cake was, however, too small for the big crowd in attendance. Then came the time to ask for his age and he didn’t want to walk that road, but a close relative intimated that the Valu Valu singer had turned 35.

NIGERIAN SETS COMEDY WORLD RECORD...

There are many comedians but only one has proved that his are downloaded from above so we think. Naija's laughter king Ali Baba proved that he's a gifted comedian by doing a six-hour marathon comedy show without repeating even one joke. That was on Saturday May 12th, during the deluxe edition of Bunmi Davies' Stand Up Nigeria comedy show which was held at the Muson centre Onikan, the original King of comedy, Alibaba, sat in front of an audience and cracked jokes for 6 straight hours. There were no other side attractions, just him on stage...and people who were at the event said he didn't repeat any Joke. Six straight hours? This is a feat no other comedian in Nigeria has been able to accomplish.
Ali Baba’s bigg break came in 1999 when Chief Olabode George called to invite him for a small birthday party being organized for President Olusegun Obasanjo. Ali Baba made a good impression on the then President Obasanjo, which paved way for him in the corridors of power. His closeness to Mr. President has brought to Ali such names as the president’s personal jester or Aso Rock’s favourite comedian. Ali Baba can be credited for being the major force behind taking comedy from being a side kick to a serious business with popular comedians attaining celebrity status and commanding high appearance fees in events and shows.

UGANDA'S ROYAL WEDDING TO COST OVER $500,000

http://redpepper.co.ug/welcome/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Komuntale-with-her-fiance-aboard-a-yatch.jpg
Ugandan princess with fiancee
On Saturday, July 14, 2012; Toro Kingdom’s Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale will wear a barkcloth wrapping and be invited to sit on her paternal Uncle Charles Kayondo Kamurasi’s lap. As the head of the Toro Babiito Royal clan — to which Komuntale belongs — Kamurasi (traditionally known as Omujweera Musuuga) will wish his niece well. “It is a symbol of goodwill from the family — our traditional way of sending off a beloved princess,” Kamurasi says. And yet this will be the climax of a series of cultural ceremonies that will have been performed to prepare King Oyo’s elder sister for marriage. Marriage celebrations kick off with an introduction ceremony called okwanjura. According to Kamurasi, it is on this occasion that the princess officially introduces her fiancé to the entire royal family and friends. Culturally, this ceremony takes place at the Omusuuga’s residence and is not attended by the m king. So, in keeping with tradition, Komuntale will ‘okwanjura’ her fi ancé Christopher Thomas at the Omusuuga’s residence in Gweri, on Kamwenge Road, 4 miles from Fort Portal town. The celebrations will take place on Thursday, July 12.  Komuntale, her mother Best Kemigisa — the Queen Mother — close aunties and other elders will spend the night before the big day preparing for the celebration.“It will be a night of jubilation; of singing and dancing to the sounds of  makondere — the Toro cultural fl utes and accompanying drums,” says Kamurasi. It will also be the time for the princess to receive pep talk about the intricacies of marriage. “Her aunties and other elders will counsel her about the dos and donts of a good wife, how to handle her husband and how to be a good mother.”The groom will show up at the Omusuuga’s residence to request for the hand of the young princess in marriage. Together with his entourage, they will be expected to turn up dressed in white tunics (kanzu) and jackets, holding walking sticks.“Walking sticks are a symbol of an accomplished man,” says Kamurasi. The group will be received at the gate and relieved of their sticks while being ushered to their rightful place. All the while, they will be treated as visitors. “People whose visit we will have known about but whose intentions for visiting we will assume to be ignorant about,” says Kamurasi. Once they have settled in, the ceremonies will kick off with a prayer and the Toro anthem.

A Milky affair dowry

Milk is a key food in Toro; it not only feeds the sons and daughters of this fair land. “It is offered to visitors as a gesture of hospitality,” says Rev. Richard Baguma, a regent in Toro Kingdom. Nine members of the groom’s entourage will be led to the house where a group of beautiful ladies will be waiting to serve them milk in scented clay jars known as emindi. “We do everything in nines because in our culture it is a number of fortune,” says Kamurasi. The rest of the visitors will be served milk in glasses and dried coffee beans. Traditionally, sharing coffee beans is the sign of an establishment of a new relationship that is meant to strengthen the bond between the two families.Once all this has been done, visitors will go into serious discussions with the elders. “We shall ask them questions about their reason for coming and how they met the princess. We will also task them to identify the true bride from a big group of beautiful girls,” says Kamurasi. It is not cultural for the princess’s family to be offered money, food and other gifts as dowry for their daughter, but the groom will be expected to offer a fattened infertile bull to the family as a sign of appreciation. In addition to this, they will be expected to come along with two or three large gourds containing local brew (amarwa) to present to the princess’s family. The groom will also be asked to present a certifi cate endorsing the marriage from Toro Kingdom headquarters, fully signed by kingdom offi cials. “There are a number of other requirements that we will ask them to meet but which I would not like to disclose now,” says Kamurasi. After the requirements have been met to the royal clan’s satisfaction, the visitors will be invited to lunch. This will be followed by sharing of engagement rings and signing of the certificates. The ceremonies will be crowned with the singing of the Toro anthem, national anthem, a prayer and a cocktail. The visitors will then prepare themselves for the church wedding ceremony to be held at St. John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal. It will be followed by a reception at the Karuziika, hosted by King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru. It will be a fun fare where the king will speak to his subjects and where guests will be entertained. Such is the traditional marriage for a princess in Toro. Komuntale was not born when her aunt Princess Elizabeth Mpanja, daughter of Sir George Kamurasi Rukidi III married Col. William Ndahendekere from Ankole in 1965. The times may have passed, but the traditions remain.

Wedding to cost more than $500,000
Hope Mafaranga
Preparations kicked o_ with the renovation of Charles Kamurasi’s home in Gweri in Kalambi sub-county, Burahya county in Kabarole district. The house will get a face-lift ahead of Komuntale’s introduction and giveaway ceremony. Many cultural dancing groups are already rehearsing the amakondere (the royal dance) to entertain the guests. Beautiful girls have also been selected to welcome the American in-laws during the giveaway ceremony. Sources at the palace say the wedding will cost sh1b and more than 10 heads of state are expected to attend. Despite the earlier heated debate among the Batoro regarding the choice of man the princess is bringing home, the Batoro seem to have changed their minds and accepted Thomas as their son-in-law. “It will be the wedding of the century and one of the most memorable in the history of Toro Kingdom, I cannot wait,” Susan Basemera, a resident of Fort Portal said. The bishop of Rwenzori diocese, Reuben Kisembo, is expected to join the lovebirds in holy matrimony.
