DR. REMMY ONGALA PASSES ON

Veteran musician Ramadhan Mtoro Ongara better known as Dr. Remmy Ongala has passed on. The singer well known for his hit single ‘Kifo’ died on Monday morning at Muhimbili hospital. According to reports Remmy Ongala died as his family rushed him to hospital.   Ongala's music is meant to be appreciated on a physical and mental level. As he looked around his homeland of the Congo, he noticed much poverty and social inequality. Outraged by the despicable way the poor are treated, he used song as a way of fighting back, and after long days of tedious and physically strenuous labor, Ongala would perform his music with ad hoc bands in nightclubs and hotels in the Congo, (then Zaire), and later, Uganda. Songs like "Ndumila Kuwili" ("Don't Speak with Two Mouths") and "Mnyonge Hana Haki" ("The Poor Have No Rights") reflected his working-class outlook. Despite a flourishing Congolese music scene, Remmy was unable to strike a universal chord with listeners across Africa, as his idols Franco and Joseph Kabasele had done so effortlessly.
It wasn't until he ventured to Tanzania at the age of thirty-one that Ongala began to get a musical career on track. An uncle living in the Tanzanian capital of Dar-es-Salaam invited Ongala to come play music with him in the band Orchestra Makassy. When Makassy went to Kenya, Ongala stayed behind and joined Orchestre Matimila, which he later renamed Super Matimila. Ongala's group gets big band textures from the horn section and from elaborate arrangements for three guitars. The sound swept the local Tanzanian music scene, which, because of the closing of the border in 1977, had become isolated and quite unlike anything else in Africa. By 1981, Ongala and Orchestra Super Matimila, and were playing up to five nights a week in various nightclubs in Dar-es-Salaam.
Because of the dearth of quality recording studios in the financially-strapped nation, most bands would simply record and release their live performances, and Orchestra Super Matimila was no exception. Soon, their songs were being played on Radio Tanzania and various Kenyan radio stations, and they helped to develop quite a following for the band.
His inspiring message led him to be nicknamed "Dr Remmy". Following the end of British colonial rule in 1961, Julius Nyerere introduced the value of Ujamaa, or family hood, which emphasized equality and justice. Such became a recurring theme in many Tanzanian artists' music, including Remmy Ongala.
Dr. Remmy will be remembered for publicly urging people to use condoms. Although he faced opposition, he went ahead and recorded a song ‘Mambo kwa soksi’.  Ongala continued to record and perform in Tanzania--despite his international fame--and his songs are still as concerned with social injustice as ever. One song, urging men to use condoms--"Mambo Kwa Socks/Things with Socks"--appeared on the acclaimed AIDS awareness compilation Spirit of Africa, in 2001. When this song was first released, it proved too much for Radio Tanzania, which refused to play it. But live shows and black market tapes ensured that few urban Tanzanians missed the message. In a musical career approaching two decades, Remmy Ongala and Orchestra Super Matimila still made social issues sound funky.
In 1989 he released his first studio album titled ‘Songs for the poor man’ which had songs like ‘Sauti Ya Mnyonge, Kifo  ,Usingizi ,Muziki Asili Yake Wapi ,Pamella ,Dole
Mariam Wangu, Nasikitika ,Karola and ‘Kipenda Roho’. Four year later he released his second one dubbed ‘Mambo’ while his third album was released in 2000. The album was titled ‘Sema’.
After years of singing and entertaining, Remmy Ongala finally saw the light in 2007 and ditched World music for gospel. His last album is a gospel one titled ‘ Kwa Yesu kuna furaha’.
There are speculations that before Remmy were delivered, his mother had miscarried twice. And therefore when she was carrying Remmy in her womb, she sought the help of a traditional doctor so that she could deliver safely.  And the traditional doc advised her not to deliver in the hospital but in the bush and after delivery she shouldn’t shave the baby. Remmy’s mother honored and that is the reason the singer remained dread locked until he saw the light that is when he shaved. Remy is believed to have been born with two of his teeth ready grown.
His father was the one that began to teach him music at an early age. But his father later passed on when he was six years of age and already in school. But due to poverty he dropped out of school.
In 1964, his mother also passed on leaving him to take care of his younger siblings. Without any skill on him, he decided to do music. With his band called Bantu Success, Remmy together with his band mates did shows in different hotels in Democratic republic of Congo. For several years Remmy Ongala performed around in different cities in DRC with different Congolese bands among the Success Muachana and Grand Mickey of Uganda.
In 1978 Remmy moved to Dar-es-salaam after his uncle called him to join the then popular band Orchestra Makassy which was under his uncle Makassy.  While still with Orchestra Makassy band, he wrote his first single “Siku ya Kufa”, a song he wrote to remember his friend who had died. It is this song made his popular.
He served at Ochestra Makassy band as a vocalist cum guitarist for three years before moving to another band. This was after his uncle Makassy moved his band to Kenya in 1981. Remmy Ongala moved to Orchestra Super Matimila band which was coming up and molded it to another big band. Orchestra Super Matimila band had eighteen members and Remmy Ongala rose to be the band leader. One year later he changed the name to Super Matimila. Because of his unrivalled poetic prowess in his songs that spoke heavily about social injustices and real life issues, his fame grew steadily across the region and in the continent.
His first international breakthrough came through when he gave out unidentified white his cassette. Little did he know that it would land him a deal with the prestigious World of Music, Arts and Dance organization who invited him for the European festivals in 1988.  It’s while there that he got the rare opportunity to record at Real World studios in the UK which is owned by popular singer Peter Gabriel. He recorded three of his albums; songs for the poor man, Sema and Mambo.
In the previous years, the veteran Congolese singer quit secular music claiming it was full of evil. He later saw the light and was baptized and shaved his dreadlocks. Before his death, Remmy was in the last steps to completing his fifth album which is gospel titled ‘ Bado Naishi Sinza’. Burial will be at his home in Sinza kwa Remmy in Dar es salaam, Tanzania on a date to be set by his family. He’s survived by three children.
Remmy a guitarist and singer, is a well-known musician on the Tanzanian landscape, but was born in 1947 in Kivu, D .R. C. A rising musician since the late 1980s, Remmy Ongala was part of the Soukous sense (a Congolese kind of rumba which in conjunction with his Orchestra Super Matimila he helped to transmute to the Tanzanian music often called Ubungo, the Swahili word for brain, in TZ, which in turn led to Tanzanian hip-hop particularly in the city of  during the 1990s. Believing in the abolishment of racism and social injustice, Ongala infuses his lyrics with these messages.

WHEN QUTE JOINS ISLAM...

When Sulaiman Sekamate turned Muslim, he said he just loved the religion, although we associated it with his new catch. When Ragga Dee appeared at the goat races in a Muslim outfit, we started sniffing around. But before we got something, Qute Kaye dropped a surprise. The Ginkese star has converted to Islam and changed his name to Akram. What baffles us is nobody is able to put a finger on why he has decided to change religion.

BLU 3 GIRLS PREGNANT

Mya
Looks like the BLU3 girls have gone on a maternity leave with two of their members heavily pregnant. It started as a rumour and then fizzled out, but now its official and SHOWBIZXKLUSIVS comfirms that Blu3's Mya (real name Edith Baganda) is pregnant. The sexy singer/dancer looked very heavy at a recent wedding where she was one of the bridesmaids.Mya confirmed that she is in the last stages of her pregnancy but would not reveal the father. When asked if its true she had broken up with him, she said he is out of the country for now and she hopes he stays there for now. We hope those were just her hormones speaking. Also pregnant is Lilian Mbabazi who is also at her last stages. The father to her unborn baby is none other than Mowzey Radio.
Attempts to get a comment from Talend256's boss Aly Allibhai on the future of Blu3 with two of the members pregnant were futile.

MOWZEY RADIO PREGNANTS THREE LADIES!!!

Mowzey Radio is expecting to become a dad three times this year alone.Well, a reliable source in Good Lyfe confirmed that Mowzey has three girlfriends who are pregnant including Blu3’s Lillian Mbabazi.
According to the source, the second girl is called, Jen and she stays in Jinja town. The source told Showbizxklusivs that Mowzey impregnated Jen while on a music tour in Jinja six months ago. We’re also told that Mowzey’s Mzungu girlfriend Kieran is four months pregnant. Actually, last week we overheard Mowzey talking to Lillian on phone as she asked him to take her some tablets because she was “feeling funny”.
The source says that Mowzey has shown responsibility and he cares for all his girls.
“It has been taxing for him and you can clearly see that he is kind of stressed but he has not stopped to support them,” said the source. “The Mzungu has also had some encounters with Lillian but he has made them accept each other.”
He must be sweeter than kuku, indeed!

IS BEBE COOL REALLY FASTING??

One evening he’s enjoying a good time in a bar and the next morning he boldly swears to be fasting! You must be wondering what kind of Muslim that would be! But yes, that’s singer Bebe Cool! SHOWBIZXKLUSIVS  bumped into the singer having a nice time with several friends last Tuesday at Steak Out Bar. But Bebe shocked us the following day when he made a post on his Facebook page alleging that he was busy fasting! We kept wondering what kind of Muslim would hang out in a bar during Ramadhan but still claims to be fasting! However, Bebe Cool who leaves for further treatment in the US sometime this week argued that he wasn’t just hanging out, but was working! “I don’t drink alcohol anymore; I was there to promote my new songs. That’s my job and I was at work,” Bebe said.  We weren’t satisfied with Bebe’s reasoning but we were informed that sick people and people with complications are exempted from fasting!

UG GOV'T COMPENSATES BEBE COOL

When we said he’s perhaps the only artists in Uganda to be so tight with the President, many didn’t believe us. Moses Saali alias Bebe Cool is the first artist to get a warm visit from the big man a few months back after getting shot by a  trigger-happy security officer at Effendy’s bar and club. The president even went ahead and promised to meet the damages the singer went through during his absence from the music scene.
A few debates were carried out whether the Bogolako singer would be paid or it was just media hype but to everyone’s astonishment, state house released info that Bebe is to be given 180million shs as compensation for the damages he endured at the beginning of this year.
The money will also be part of Bebe’s further treatment in the USA until he gets back on his two feet. He’s slated to travel a few weeks from now with his wife Zuena and two kids Alpha and Beata.
However, the question on everyone’s mind is? Did the Government make the right decision of meeting Bebe’s costs? Because he sued the government a few months back for “damages” yet he has been performing in several places like his “Denmark tour” last month, “Return of the king concert” and not forgetting more places he has been advertised on!

BOBI WINE TO FACE CHARGES

Soon after settling the land tenants who were claiming to own his one luv beach premises, singer Bobi Wine is yet again in trouble for “Plagiarism” charges. It is said Robinah Bisiilikilwa, wife to fallen star Paul Job Kafero of the Kadongo kamu fame is willing to take the self proclaimed Uganja President to the courts of law for  re-doing “ Dipo Nazigala” to “Ghetto Nazigala”.

“The song is said to be one of Paul’s best going by requests and airplay it received on most media houses but for an artist such as Bobi Wine to re-do the song shows lack of respect because he never got consent from the family.” according to an insider. The song is almost the same except for the few lines and fast beats Bobi changed to make captivating for his fans.
Now Bisiliikilwa is willing to take the matter as far as the courts of law unless the “Mr Money” singer pays an amount she’s yet to disclose as a lesson to others for not repeating the same act.
Paul Kafeero dated Robina Bisiliikilwa who by then was still in Kulabako guitar singer as a buck up artist and was among his many wives.

RAY C'S DRAMA.....SEX ADVANCES ALLEGATIONS AND MUCH MORE

Sadat the promoter

Ray C and hubby Lord Eyez
Bongo songbird Ray C has now revealed that the promoter of her Kenyan tour, Sadat, wanted to sleep with her. Apparently, before she came to Kenya, Sadat of Maliza Umaskini flew to Dar on a 'business trip'. "Sadat told me that he was on a business trip but kept on sending me sex-related messages, which I still have on my phone. I was shocked because I didn't expect that from him," she said. Apparently, drama started when Ray C went to meet Sadat accompanied by her boyfriend Lord Eye, something that didn't go down well with the promoter, an aspiring politician from Kitale.
"It became worse when I showed up at the airport with Lord Eye, and Sadat became completely pissed off. Because I refused to sleep with him in Dar, then I come to Kenya with my boyfriend, he started creating excuses to cancel my show," she said. Ray C is yet to be paid $9,000, even after her shows were canceled. Promoter-cum-politician Sadat has defended his move to cancel Ray C's Kenyan tour. According to Sadat, he was not happy with the way Ray C conducted herself from the airport to Club Summit in Nakuru. "She was under influence and I actually saved her from embarrassing herself on stage. She was almost taking all her clothes off on stage," said Sadat. He has also denied rumors that he wanted to sleep with Ray C.
"I didn't send her any suggestive messages as she claims. If I had any problem, why did I pay for her boyfriend's air ticket to Nairobi?" he asks. Meanwhile, Sadat has canceled Ray C's and her boyfie's tickets back to Dar, that means they have to pay their own air tickets. Ray C, was meant to do a series of shows in Kenya this month and finally wind up the tour in Southern Sudan's capital, Juba. According to close sources, the Kenyan tour alone was supposed to earn the musician $10,000 (about KSh800,000), and the agreement was that she gets her downpayment upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta international airport. She was to get the rest before she goes on stage in her first show, which was in Nakuru last Saturday. The promoters, with musician Refigah as their spokesman, did not honor the agreement at the airport but still proceeded for the Nakuru show. Ray C did not complain as she went on stage and wowed the crowd. Real trouble started when fans asked for more songs and Refigah had to snatch the microphone from Ray C and cut the show. The promoters started accusing her of going against the agreement, and she was forced to take a cab to her hotel. On Sunday morning, the promoters phones were all off and when Ray C managed to raise one of them, she was threatened and told to go back to Dar es Salaam..

AFRICAN WOMAN PUBLISHER DIVORCES HUBBY

She’s a renowned fashion designer and the proprietor of African Woman magazine. Sylvia Owori’s business empire has been on the rise in the recent past but as we came to know, her love life hasn’t been a very lively one. Last week, showbizxklusivs received information from a reliable source that Owori had decided to end her 14 year relationship with her Dutch fiancé Per Munk-Nielsen. According to the source close to the former model, Owori packed her belongings and left her marital home in Luzira. Nielsen has a children with Sylvia and is also a shareholder in African Woman.
“Nielsen is the CEO of African Woman. Sylvia insisted that they will maintain the work relationship to ensure African Woman remains at its level of success,” the source added. “She left along with her two children. I don’t really know why she left but I think she was getting too busy for the relationship,” the source said. We learnt that Sylvia who frequently flies in and out the country to oversee her business in Nairobi, is quite busy with a few other projects. We’ve been told that Owori is renting a house in the posh residential Kololo  area. Efforts to get a comment from Owori were fruitless as she couldn’t pick up her phone. Meanwhile, we also learnt that Owori is working day and night to make sure her new club Black Pearl located at the Golf Course hotel basement opens up. “She also has a new project with Alicia Keys’ Keep a Child Alive foundation.” The source revealed.

VAMPOSS DISSES CHAMELEONE

If the police can’t get Chameleone, singer Vamposs and a few friends are willing to help deliver him personally to the police. During our late night errands last Thursday night, we bumped into Vampos along with allies Viboyo and James B and they alleged that they were looking for Chameleone to personally hand him over to the police! Vampos also revealed that sometime last week, he hit studios and recorded a song specifically for Jose Chameleone.  “The song is called Ndongo. It’s basically about the fact that for long Chameleone has released funny music. It’s time for Ugandans to get to enjoy the real music-dancehall and forget about things that have no classification!” Vampos said. Vampos recorded the song at Swangz Avenue and he promised to out it sometime this week!

CHAMELEONE ASSAULTS POPULAR MUSICIAN

Beef and fights seem to have no end in Uganda's showbiz. The latest news that have landed on showbizxklusivs desk indicate that Pearl's lead singer Jose Chameleone beat up dance hall artiste Vamposs yesterday. The reason being Vamposs refused to worship Chameleone, a thing that never went well with the Leon Island point-man ending in a showdown.  The details about the fight have been scanty but the war is likely to continue as Swangz Avenue artistes have promised to revenge against the Leon Island boss. Vamposs brother Maurice Kirya was shocked at what Chameleone did to his brother. 'I was blind but now i see, with blows to his face, he wondered why he was attacked, and the answer was, because he did not worship the Dr. Joseph chameleon! i hope my brother vamposs recovers from the injuries and dis figured face, i love his music, but chameleon has attacked many, and is protected by all of us. We have ...all failed to lead as a good example to the coming generation! said Maurice Kirya. And the war could get uglier if the Swangz avenue keep their word to revenge.  ''You shall fight the whole swangz and friends, beat everyone you find, but trust me Vampino was the last, he's the wakeup call. You pressed the wrong button, played a bad card. We got you another title coming. The man u beat is like the swangz ambasoder. he too got a commandin that follow him, now we are all out,' said Viboyo when he called on us.
